Because each packing station has many items in multiple orders, packers must be careful to avoid mistakes.ĥ. Packing stations are at the shipping doors and each team is manned by 3 people. Usually a batch is split when picking because of forklift capacity.Ĥ. 4 or 5 employees use “man-up” forklifts to pick items for the orders, and, bring them to Packing Stations for packing and shipment. Sales orders come are brought to the warehouse in batches of 10 orders with 2 to 4 furniture items per order.ģ. Items are unloaded, later moved to the back of the warehouse, and still later put on shelves when the inventory and location are updated into the computer.Ģ. Speed is important to avoid demurrage charges. 4 people do the unloading and it is manual because of the incoming assortment packed into the container. One door is used for unloading the 4 or so containers trucks coming in daily. The warehouse has about 12 doors for loading and unloading. You can see the major steps numbered in the diagramsġ. Lets look at the warehouse operation in more detail. It is then picked from inventory and shipped to fulfill sales orders. Furniture is acquired and shipped to the warehouse for storage in warehouse inventory. The furniture distributors operation is depicted here. The remainder of the blog is a transcript of Dave’s narration. A “Learn and Do” concept that will be discussed further. The Home Goods Distributor had the objective of learning lean through its actual application. This particular project came in as a referral from another client of NJMEP that Dave was also involved with. There are one or more MEP centers in most states in the US with a similar charter. The NJMEP is a non-profit company dedicated to assisting the 10,000 New Jersey Manufacturers to become more efficient and profitable. An MEP company is one that is sponsored by NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NJMEP is a Manufacturing Extension Program company, or MEP for short. Dave gets many of his projects through the NJMEP. Some background first on the improvement project. We appreciate his sharing his work, results and takeaways. We have been impressed with his knowledge and approach to lean throughout. He has not only used the eVSM software over that period but has suggested many enhancements that have benefited our whole user community. Dave started his lean consultancy, the Prime Business Group in 2002 and we have known him for at least the last decade.
